The trustees expect to approve career choices
The trustees could be kind and generous, but expected to be consulted about everything. If they did not know a new employer, or suspected they were not a member of the Church of England, they refused to pay for anything and, if they were really annoyed, would not allow the leaver to keep their school clothes (which belonged to the school, not the pupil).
This happened on occasion, and if there was any doubt, the school master or school mistress was instructed to make enquiries about the new employer.
